Aston Villa Rout Fenerbahçe 6-0 in Champions League League Phase Clash

Aston Villa defeated Fenerbahçe 6-0 at Villa Park on Wednesday in the second matchday of the UEFA Champions League league phase, according to Hürriyet. The English side scored three goals in each half, leaving the Turkish club with one point from its opening two fixtures.

Fenerbahçe had early chances through Vedat Muriqi but could not convert, and Villa punished them repeatedly on the way to a lopsided result.

Why it matters

The margin leaves Fenerbahçe's European campaign under serious pressure after two matchdays. Villa, meanwhile, moved to six points and strengthened its position in the league phase table.

For Fenerbahçe, the defeat raises immediate questions about defending and finishing ahead of a home fixture against Slavia Prague in matchday three. For Villa, the performance underlined how quickly the new format can reward a team that takes its chances.

How the goals arrived

Villa opened the scoring in the 12th minute. From a corner on the left, Johan Manzambi collected a ball that Fenerbahçe's Matteo Guendouzi failed to clear and shot from close range. The attempt deflected off Milan Skriniar and left goalkeeper Ederson wrong-footed as it crossed the line.

Nicolas Jackson doubled the lead after Muriqi gave the ball away in midfield. Boubacar Kamara intercepted the loose pass and found Jackson nearby; the striker struck from just outside the penalty area and beat Ederson at the near post.

Jackson added his second and Villa's third after another Fenerbahçe turnover, this time when İsmail Yüksek lost possession. That goal made it 3-0 and effectively ended the contest before half-time.

Ross Barkley made it four from the penalty spot in the 40th minute. Manzambi went down inside the area after a foul by İsmail Yüksek, and the referee pointed to the spot. Barkley sent the ball and Ederson to opposite corners.

Barkley scored his second, and Villa's fifth, in the 72nd minute. He shot from outside the box, the ball struck substitute Bartuğ Elmaz and diverted past Ederson, who had already committed to his original position.

Tammy Abraham completed the scoring in the 90th minute, capping a night in which Villa converted nearly every significant opening.

Fenerbahçe's missed chances and Villa's control

The scoreline could have looked different inside the opening quarter of an hour. In the 14th minute, İrfan Can Kahveci delivered a cross from the right and found Muriqi unmarked at the back post, but Villa goalkeeper Suzuki saved with two attempts near his post.

Three minutes later, Oğuz Aydın played a pass behind the Villa defence and sent Muriqi through one-on-one. Suzuki denied him again.

Villa had threatened first, though. John McGinn tried his luck from outside the box in the third minute, with the ball narrowly wide of the post. Pau Torres headed over from a corner in the 22nd minute, and Jackson forced a save from Ederson on the half-hour mark.

Fenerbahçe's Guendouzi was booked in the 42nd minute for pulling back Manzambi. After the break, Oğuz shot over from distance in the 57th minute, and a Greenwood free kick in the 64th minute came back off the wall. Villa broke from that sequence and Mbaye went clear on Ederson, but the Brazilian goalkeeper blocked with his feet.

Fenerbahçe made changes as the game slipped away, with İsmail Yüksek, Mason Greenwood and Muriqi withdrawn and Bartuğ Elmaz, Nene and Romelu Lukaku introduced. Hürriyet described İsmail Yüksek's night as a difficult one, and Sporx separately framed it as a nightmare outing for the midfielder.

Before kick-off, Fenerbahçe coach İsmail Kartal said his side knew Villa's strengths and intended to play with discipline and as a unit. He acknowledged that the flow of a match can force a team away from its plan, and said he trusted his players to produce the best possible result. Slovak referee Ivan Kružliak started the match, which Fenerbahçe kicked off.

What to watch next

Fenerbahçe host Slavia Prague in matchday three, while Villa will look to build on a result that has already reshaped its league phase outlook.
